The French president said to his Chinese counterpart: ‘I know I can count on you … to bring Russia back to reason and everyone to the negotiating table’, as the two held the first of a series of high-level meetings in Beijing. Macron said: ‘We need to find a lasting peace, that is to say a peace that respects internationally recognised borders and avoids any kind of escalation’
