UK warns Afghans to avoid Kabul airport due to terrorist attack threat
Minister says Isis-K group will want to strike dramatically, with fears assault could come within hours
Afghans trying to flee Kabul for the UK have been told not to head to the airport owing to the threat of a “highly lethal” terrorist attack by Islamic State, possibly within hours.
James Heappey, the armed forces minister, issued the warning as the deadline for ending civilian and military evacuations through the “air bridge” out from the Afghan capital drew nearer. The final US troops will depart by next Tuesday, 31 August, and UK troops are expected to do so slightly earlier.
