Vietnam beer boom dries up as zero tolerance drink-driving laws introduced

Maximum fine is double a month’s earnings for many and has contributed to 25% drop in beer sales

Vietnam’s Tet holiday is only days away, and its open-air bars should be busy with drinkers ready to celebrate the lunar new year – but instead, owners say they are struggling to attract customers.

The introduction of harsh new penalties for anyone caught drink-driving, introduced just weeks ago, have caused beer sales in the country to plummet by at least 25%.
