White Island volcano: operation to recover bodies begins
Helicopters set off from New Zealand mainland despite serious risk of volcano erupting again
A military operation to retrieve the bodies of eight people from White Island in New Zealand has begun, with defence force boats setting out at 4.30am, despite a serious risk of the volcano erupting again.
Deputy commissioner John Tims said the operation had started after a prayer was held at sea, which was calm and flat with no sign of wind, and military operators landed on the Island just after 8am.
