Nauru’s parliament elects Lionel Aingimea as president amid refugee crisis
Aingimea takes office as Australia attempts to repeal medevac laws and Nauru accused of blocking medical care to refugees
Nauru’s new president, Lionel Aingimea, says he will be like a “father of the nation”, guiding and protecting the South Pacific island’s 12,000 people.
Aingimea won the vote for presidency on Tuesday, 12 votes to six, against former finance minister David Adeang.
