{"id":8435,"date":"2019-09-03T21:13:58","date_gmt":"2019-09-03T12:13:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2019\/sep\/03\/su-shaozhi-obituary"},"modified":"2019-09-03T21:13:58","modified_gmt":"2019-09-03T12:13:58","slug":"su-shaozhi-obituary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eastasianews.net\/wp\/?p=8435","title":{"rendered":"Su Shaozhi obituary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Chinese political scientist who was forced into exile after the Tiananmen Square massacre<\/p>\n<p>The political scientist Su Shaozhi, who has died aged 96, was a campaigner for reform of the Chinese Communist party in the post-<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/mao-zedong\" title=\"\">Mao<\/a> years, until he was forced into exile after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/tiananmen-square-protests-1989\" title=\"\">Tiananmen Square massacre of 1989<\/a>. Su was eventually allowed to return to China, but the news of his death has been ignored except on unofficial websites.<\/p>\n<p>In his earlier career, Su would admit, he had \u201cput obedience to the [Communist] party in first place\u201d, churning out what was required to \u201celaborate the thoughts of Chairman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/1976\/sep\/10\/china.johngittings1\" title=\"\">Mao<\/a>\u201d. He made up for this in the 1980s by denouncing the party\u2019s \u201cfeudalism and Stalinism\u201d and proposing democratic reforms that are still unachieved.
