Since then, suppression has become more systematic and less visible, lawyers say<\/p>\n<p>A decade on from China\u2019s biggest crackdown on human rights lawyers in modern history, lawyers and activists say that the Chinese Communist party\u2019s control over the legal profession has tightened, making rights defence work next to impossible.<\/p>\n<p>The environment for human rights law has \u201csteadily regressed, especially after the pandemic\u201d, said Ren Quanniu, a disbarred human rights lawyer. \u201cRight now, the rule of law in China \u2013 especially in terms of protecting human rights \u2013 has deteriorated to a point where it\u2019s almost comparable to the Cultural Revolution era.\u201d The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2016\/may\/11\/the-cultural-revolution-50-years-on-all-you-need-to-know-about-chinas-political-convulsion\">Cultural Revolution<\/a> was a decade of mass chaos unleashed by China\u2019s former leader Mao Zedong in 1966.
