In April, Japan\u2019s chief trade negotiator, Ryosei Akazawa, sat opposite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/donaldtrump\">Donald Trump<\/a> in the Oval Office after \u201cpositive and constructive\u201d talks, sporting a Maga baseball cap and giving a thumbs up for the cameras.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/japan\">Japan<\/a>\u2019s economic revitalisation minister drew criticism back home for the gesture, forcing him to insist there was \u201cno political significance\u201d behind it.
