Here\u2019s what we know so far<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/mar\/30\/aftershocks-frighten-myanmar-survivors-while-death-toll-from-bangkok-high-rise-collapse-rises\">death toll from a 7.7-magnitude earthquake<\/a> that struck Myanmar on Friday <strong>has surpassed 1,700<\/strong> and flattened huge swathes of the South-east Asian nation.<\/p>\n<p>The US Geological Survey\u2019s predictive modelling estimates Myanmar\u2019s <strong>death toll could eventually top 10,000<\/strong> and losses could exceed the country\u2019s annual economic output.<\/p>\n<p>Red Cross officials said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/myanmar\">Myanmar<\/a> was facing <strong>\u201ca level of devastation that hasn\u2019t been seen over a century in Asia\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In neighbouring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/thailand\">Thailand<\/a>, <strong>at least 18 people have been killed<\/strong> and rescue efforts are continuing at the site of a collapsed 30-storey tower in Bangkok. Rescuers are scrambling to find 78 people still missing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rescuers freed a woman from the ruins of a hotel<\/strong> in Myanmar\u2019s Mandalay, officials said on Monday, offering a glimmer of hope that more survivors may be found.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/video\/2025\/mar\/30\/before-and-after-satellite-images-show-devastation-caused-by-myanmar-earthquake-video\">Images from the city of Mandalay<\/a> <strong>show entire neighbourhoods in ruins<\/strong> and broken-off pagodas from the top of temples reduced to rubble. Highways, bridges, airports and railways in several parts of the country have been damaged, Reuters reports.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Burmese military jets launched airstrikes and drone attacks<\/strong> in Karen state, according to the Free Burma Rangers, a relief organisation. The strikes hit near the headquarters of the Karen National Union (KNU), an armed resistance group against the country\u2019s military-run government.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>KNU criticised the country\u2019s military government<\/strong> for \u201cdeploying forces to attack its people\u201d when it should be focused on the relief effort. Singapore\u2019s foreign minister, Vivian Balakrishnan, <strong>called for an immediate ceasefire<\/strong> to help aid distribution.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Aid from China, Russia, India, the UK<\/strong> and neighbouring South-east Asian nations has begun flowing into Myanmar.<\/p>\n<p><strong>China sent an 82-person team of rescuers into the country<\/strong> in the hours after the quake and a 118-member search and rescue team had also arrived, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported.<\/p>\n<p>The Chinese government said it would provide <strong>100m yuan ($13.8m) in emergency humanitarian assistance<\/strong>, with shipments to begin Monday.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, the US government \u2013 which is in the process of gutting its central foreign <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/usaid\">aid agency, USAID <\/a>\u2013 has <strong>pledged just $2m<\/strong> for the relief effort.<\/p>\n<p>In the city of Sagaing, which was hit by the quake and a series of aftershocks, the provincial fire department was among the building destroyed, <strong>damaging all the rescue machinery and vehicles inside.<\/strong> There are not enough rescue teams to retrieve the dead bodies, nor is there sufficient equipment to sift through debris.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sagaing\u2019s hospital has also been damaged,<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/mar\/30\/collapsed-buildings-myanmar-quake-rescuers-medics-struggle-task\">forcing patients outside<\/a> into the searing heat, said Ma Ei, a resident who has helped in the humanitarian efforts.
