It\u2019s an often-heard sentiment these days, but is it really true? Historical comparisons are of limited help.<\/p>\n<p>Last week\u2019s 80th anniversary of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/jan\/27\/memory-hurts-memory-guides-auschwitzs-survivors-gather-for-80th-anniversary-of-camps-liberation\">liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau <\/a>concentration camp, where 1.1 million people, mostly Jews, were murdered by the Nazis between 1940 and 1945, offered a grim reminder of how indescribably brutal life can be when war reigns unchecked.
