But as two members of the \u201cmorality police\u201d appeared from the crowd, terror and panic eclipsed all thoughts of groceries. Although we were dressed in modest clothing and headscarves, the men chastised us for failing to wear face masks \u2013 a shortcoming deemed \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/article\/2024\/jun\/25\/afghan-women-girls-accuse-taliban-sexual-assault-after-arrests-bad-hijab-suicide\">bad hijab<\/a>\u201d under their law. Three years after the fall of Kabul to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/taliban\">Taliban<\/a> militants marked the collapse of western democracy across Afghanistan, these encounters are commonplace.<\/p>\n<p>Afghanistan is now the only country in the world that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/article\/2024\/jun\/14\/nobody-is-coming-to-help-us-afghan-teenage-girls-on-life-without-school\">prevents girls from attending school<\/a> after sixth grade. Women can no longer obtain driving licences and even require a male chaperone to move from province to province and around the city. But while the liberties we once enjoyed continue to recede, the world\u2019s attention has moved elsewhere.
