A member of my extended family posted photos and videos of fireworks with the caption \u201ca very good day\u201d and many smiley emojis. When I asked, \u201cwhat are we celebrating?\u201d she replied, \u201cthe temple in Ayodhya\u201d. It quickly escalated into a heated discussion about the decision to build a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2024\/jan\/22\/modi-inaugurates-hindu-temple-on-site-of-razed-mosque-in-india\">Hindu temple in place of a mosque <\/a>that was razed to the ground, and the rise of far-right<strong> <\/strong>ideology.<\/p>\n<p>As someone who left India 20 years ago for the UK, I am often seen as an \u201coutsider\u201d who cannot really understand Indian politics. If I comment on the political climate I\u2019m accused of being brainwashed by the foreign media and discriminating against India.
