Last month, Ecuador struck the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/americas\/ecuador-seals-record-debt-for-nature-swap-with-galapagos-bond-2023-05-09\/\">biggest deal of its kind<\/a>: refinancing $1.6bn (\u00a31.3bn) of its commercial debt at a discount in exchange for a consistent revenue stream for conservation around the Gal\u00e1pagos Islands.<\/p>\n<p>Other nature-rich countries that are struggling to pay their debts have taken notice and deals are rumoured in Gabon and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thethirdpole.net\/en\/nature\/debt-for-nature-swaps-can-help-south-asia\/#:~:text=Last%20year%2C%20Sri%20Lanka%20was,USD%2040%20billion%20of%20debt.\">Sri Lanka<\/a>.
