{"id":55705,"date":"2023-06-04T03:14:53","date_gmt":"2023-06-03T18:14:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2023\/jun\/03\/indias-10-worst-rail-disasters-before-the-latest-tragedy"},"modified":"2023-06-04T03:14:53","modified_gmt":"2023-06-03T18:14:53","slug":"indias-10-worst-rail-disasters-before-the-latest-tragedy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eastasianews.net\/wp\/?p=55705","title":{"rendered":"India&#8217;s 10 worst rail disasters before the latest tragedy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the past 20 years, there have been at least 13 train crashes that have killed more than 50 people, some caused deliberately<\/p>\n<p>The train collision that has left <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2023\/jun\/03\/wailing-for-help-passengers-and-bystanders-tell-of-india-train-crash-horror\">at least 288 dead and hundreds injured<\/a> is one of the deadliest accidents on India\u2019s notoriously dangerous rail network.<\/p>\n<p>In the past two decades alone, the country has had at least 13 railway incidents that have each left more than 50 people dead, including three caused by deliberate attacks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2016<\/strong> At least 146 people died when an Indore-Patna Express train with about 2,000 people on board derailed in Uttar Pradesh on 20 November, sending carriages crashing into each other.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2010<\/strong> On 28 May, a train derailed and crashed into a freight train about 83 miles west of Kolkata in the eastern state of Bengal, killing 146 and injuring over 200. Authorities accused Maoists rebels of sabotage.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2002<\/strong> The luxury Rajdhani Express, heading from Calcutta to New Delhi, veered off its tracks and plunged into the swollen Dhabi river, killing at least 120 people. Railway authorities said sabotage had caused the crash, but did not name the culprits.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2006<\/strong> A series of attacks by Islamists on trains and stations in the Mumbai area left 186 dead and 700 wounded on 11 July.
