People are fighting for basic rights and freedoms \u2013 but also for the means to survive<\/p>\n<p>When 98% of the population is short of food, all that is left is hope. In Afghanistan there is not much of that either. On Wednesday, the Taliban abruptly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/mar\/23\/girls-in-afghanistan-school-taliban\" title=\"\">reversed their decision<\/a> to let girls return to secondary school; the last-minute chaos appears to reflect internal disagreements. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-asia-60848649\" title=\"\">Tears fell<\/a> as pupils arrived in classrooms for the first time since the Taliban takeover last August, only for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/2022\/mar\/10\/robbed-of-hope-afghan-girls-denied-an-education-struggle-with-depression\" title=\"\">their dreams to be shattered<\/a> once more.<\/p>\n<p>Taliban forces are carrying out revenge killings and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2022\/03\/22\/afghanistan-taliban-threaten-revenge-killings\" title=\"\">threatening more<\/a>. They are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2022\/03\/07\/afghanistan-taliban-threatening-provincial-media\" title=\"\">detaining and beating journalists<\/a> and closing media outlets. They are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/report\/2022\/01\/26\/even-if-you-go-skies-well-find-you\/lgbt-people-afghanistan-after-taliban-takeover\" title=\"\">harassing, assaulting and threatening<\/a> lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Afghans.
