She sighs audibly into the phone.<\/p>\n<p>Runga, who is of Chinese and Ng\u0101ti Kahungunu descent, shot to international fame in her 20s with 1997 album Drive, and went on to become one of New Zealand\u2019s leading songwriters. \u201cI was someone that grew up with pretty sustained, garden-variety racism,\u201d she says. \u201cI don\u2019t really have the words for it \u2013 it\u2019s just like a wash of backdrop. It\u2019s the actual scheme that the whole thing is built on \u2026 It\u2019s like asking a fish to describe water.
