Indigenous M\u0101ori already had legal customs in the form of tikanga, a set of rules and principles which governed daily life. But the settlers dismissed M\u0101ori as \u201csavages\u201d and tikanga as primitive. As their power grew, so did the common law\u2019s. Eventually, though many M\u0101ori still followed tikanga, it was pushed to the legal margins.<\/p>\n<p>That is starting to change. In 2020 New Zealand\u2019s supreme court <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/by-allowing-the-peter-ellis-appeal-to-continue-the-supreme-court-recognises-the-right-to-justice-outlives-the-individual-145447\">allowed a dead man\u2019s appeal to continue<\/a>, apparently on the basis that his mana (the M\u0101ori concept of status) continues to fluctuate after death.
