Civilians are defiant \u2013 but while their resistance persists, so does the military\u2019s bloody grip on power<\/p>\n<p>Eleven-year-old Aye Myat Thu was buried with her dolls at the weekend, hours after she was killed by security forces in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/myanmar\" title=\"\">Myanmar<\/a>. The horror of her death is far from unique: more than 30 children <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irrawaddy.com\/news\/burma\/dozen-children-killed-myanmar-regime-bloody-weekend.html\" title=\"\">have reportedly died<\/a> in the brutal crackdown on protests against last month\u2019s coup, including a five-year-old boy and a seven-year-old girl who was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-asia-56501871\" title=\"\">shot dead in her home<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>More than 100 people were killed on Saturday alone. More than 500 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2021\/mar\/30\/garbage-strike-and-candle-lit-vigils-as-myanmar-death-toll-passes-500\" title=\"\">have died<\/a> since the military seized control, arresting the civilian leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, and other elected politicians from her National League for Democracy (NLD), and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2021\/feb\/01\/threat-of-myanmar-coup-was-never-far-away\" title=\"\">wresting back what power<\/a> they had allowed the people. The deaths and arrests are only part of the damage.
