Ahead of the first anniversary, New Zealand First\u2019s Shane Jones goes into election mode and stokes racial tensions <\/p>\n

Isn\u2019t it astonishing that, not even two weeks out from the Christchurch shooting\u2019s first anniversary, the senior cabinet minister Shane Jones \u2013 an MP for New Zealand First, a party you could arguably describe as our local Ukip branch \u2013 is basing his re-election campaign on stoking anti-immigrant racism.<\/p>\n

In a television sit-down last weekend<\/a> the \u201cretail politician\u201d \u2013 Jones\u2019s words \u2013 went after the Indian community, blaming its students for \u201cruining\u201d New Zealand universities and arguing the country was opening the doors too widely to immigrants from \u201cNew Delhi\u201d. He guaranteed that only New Zealand First would cut immigration. Labour, in Jones\u2019s telling, is too \u201cPC\u201d to make the necessary cuts, and National are apparently in the pocket of Johnny foreigner taking big-money donations from overseas contributors. They won\u2019t follow through either.<\/p>\n
