It is targeted anti-Muslim brutality | Kenan Malik"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Blame the poisonous ideology of the Hindu nationalist BJP for the blood on India\u2019s streets<\/p>\n<p>In August 1958, gangs of white youths began systematically attacking West Indians in London\u2019s Notting Hill, assaulting them with iron bars and meat cleavers and milk bottles. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk\/2002\/aug\/24\/artsandhumanities.nottinghillcarnival2002\" title=\"\">One policeman reported<\/a> a 300-strong mob shouting: \u201cWe will kill all black bastards. Why don\u2019t you send them home?\u201d The attacks continued for a week before order was restored.<\/p>\n<p>The incident is still referred to as the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/warwick.ac.uk\/services\/library\/mrc\/studying\/docs\/racism\/riots\/\" title=\"\">Notting Hill riots<\/a>\u201d. It was nothing of the sort. It was a vicious week-long racist attack. Mr Justice Salmon, sentencing nine white youths at the Old Bailey, called it \u201cnigger hunting\u201d.
