{"id":12491,"date":"2019-12-27T11:16:45","date_gmt":"2019-12-27T02:16:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2019\/dec\/27\/japans-public-broadcaster-mistakenly-reports-north-korea-missile-launch"},"modified":"2019-12-27T11:16:45","modified_gmt":"2019-12-27T02:16:45","slug":"japans-public-broadcaster-mistakenly-reports-north-korea-missile-launch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eastasianews.net\/wp\/?p=12491","title":{"rendered":"Japan&#8217;s public broadcaster mistakenly reports North Korea missile launch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Amid rising tension, NHK says rocket launched into sea off Hokkaido before apologising for error<\/p>\n<p>Japan\u2019s public broadcaster, NHK, mistakenly reported that North Korea had filed a missile that landed in the sea off the country\u2019s northernmost island of Hokkaido early on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>NHK ran a newsflash on its website and news app at 12.22 am, but corrected the error about 20 minutes later, according to the Nikkei daily business paper.<\/p>\n<p>The broadcaster apologised for the mistake, saying it had been intended for \u201ctraining purposes\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The original report stated that the missile had landed in the sea about 2,000km east of Hokkaido.<\/p>\n<p>North Korea <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2017\/sep\/15\/duck-and-cover-in-japan-north-korea-missile-alerts-becoming-fact-of-life\">sent missiles over the island in 2017<\/a> to demonstrate its ability to strike US military targets on the Pacific island of Guam.<\/p>\n<p>Two launches in August and September that year triggered alerts urging million of residents in northern Japan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2017\/aug\/29\/missile-passing-japan-wakes-to-ominous-warning-about-north-korean-launch\">to take cover<\/a> in sturdy buildings or underground.<\/p>\n<p>Friday\u2019s erroneous online bulletin comes at a time of heightened tensions on the Korean peninsula, as Pyongyang\u2019s end-of year deadline approaches for the US to make concessions to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2019\/dec\/16\/us-north-korea-envoy-dismisses-year-end-deadline-for-talks-breakthrough\">resurrect stalled denuclearisation talks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>US special envoy for North Korea, Stephen Biegun, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2019\/dec\/16\/us-north-korea-envoy-dismisses-year-end-deadline-for-talks-breakthrough\">dismissed the deadline<\/a> but said Washington was ready to resume negotiations at any time during a visit to South Korea earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>Speculation that the North is preparing to test an intercontinental ballistic missile rose after its foreign ministry recently warned it would send the US a \u201cChristmas gift\u201d depending on what concessions Washington was prepared to make. <\/p>\n<p>There have no materialise, with no reports of missile of other tests by the regime on Christmas Day.<\/p>\n<p>NHK was forced to apologise in January 2018 after mistakenly sending out a J-alert warning that North Korea had fired a missile.<\/p>\n<p>The error drew a rebuke from the chief cabinet secretary, Yoshihide Suga. \u201cJ-alert provides extremely important information that affects the safety and security of Japanese citizens.
